Auguste Piccard was a Swiss physicist, inventor and explorer. He is best known for his development of the pressurized cabin, which allowed him to reach previously unattainable heights in balloons. Piccard made a total of 52 balloon flights, including a record-breaking dive to a depth of 3,150 meters in the Mariana Trench, the deepest point in the ocean. He also built the first bathyscaphe, a type of deep-sea submersible, and made several trips to the depths of the ocean in it.
